T is for Tipi

I’ve been amazed by the tipis (or teepees) I’ve seen lately. Ralph Lauren has some on his property that are like the Taj Mahal of tipis.

What is so alluring about them?

Is it the triangular shape pointing to heaven? The circular walls? The cocoon effect?

I can’t say. But I am drawn to their simplicity and coziness. Maybe there is something tribal about them that reminds us of our distant past – a time before bricks and mortar.

Whatever it is, I know that someday there will be a tipi perched outside by the pond in North Carolina or on the mound in Virginia. And maybe then I can tell you what it is that seems so appealing to me.

Hmmm, I’ve never seen the word “tipi” – always seen it as teepee. Well, you’ll definitely need to post about the future one(s) in NC or VA (or both!) and let us know how you like it/them!

  2. Now that is a North American structure.

  3. Thanks for sharing. I forget how symbolic and metaphoric the Native American culture is and this reminded me, not only is a structure functional but like the pyramids, it has a powerful symbolism connected to it, to enhance the person living in it as well as the culture and society. (our culture does the same thing…in a different way).

I’ve always wanted so have a night in a teepee. I think it would be a grand adventure!

  5. Did you ever see / stay in one of those “motels” in the West(Indian country) that had teepees for rooms – they were’t real ones and had solid walls, floors, and some had AC. We always begged, but never stopped. (We vacationed in Army surplus tents…no floors)
There’s something to speak to human spirit with teepees…the shape? Always intriguing. Enjoyed “T”

  6. I don’t know what it is about Teepees, but it is like an arrow to the stars. I would love to stay in one…maybe one of Ralph Laurens!

  7. I’d love to stay a night in one of them. I guess they are intriguing because they are so different to what we usually live in. Event a tent bares some resemblance to our houses, but these ones not so much.

  8. “Cozy” is exactly what I was thinking. Never stayed in one, or a yurt, but I’d sure like to!

It reminds me of being a kid, hanging an old bedspread over the clothesline and anchoring the bottom so it would be flared out. :)

Aw, I wanna tipi too. I think they’re awesome and historical and nostalgic and sooo enchanting. :)

  11. Did I read this correctly? You have a neighbor named Ralph Lauren? Would that be THE Ralph Lauren?

  12. TBM says:

They are pretty cool. I’ve never been into camping, but I might consider one of these. Can I use Ralph Lauren’s?

  13. Arindam says:

I have never seen these before. I would love to spend some time in it. :)

I didn’t realize these were so popular! They seem simple and efficient, maybe that’s part of the allure! ~ Sheila

  15. I think one of these would look great in my garden. It would make for a super dog house, too!
