L’epicerie in Avignon, France

L’epicerie in Avignon, France is a delightfully small restaurant where the owners close the doors when full or offer the option of dining outdoors beneath the stars and in the moon-winked shadow of Church spires.


The cobblestone courtyard is dotted with lantern-lit iron tables, and smooth jazz wafts through the air. Italianate architecture denotes history’s Roman influence, and the other Pope’s Palace–yes, there is another in addition to Vatican City’s–is just around the corner.


This is a place I dined at twice while in Avignon, and with so many wonderful choices, speaks to its quality and ambiance. If I could click my heels and find myself there once again, I’d sigh and relax.



Renee Johnson is the author of Acquisition and The Haunting of William Gray. She is currently working on a Young Adult novel, while editing a suspense novel which has international flair–an homage to her love of travel and foreign food.     1. Thank you so much. I’m working a lot now, but have such a backlog of stories to tell about places I’ve recently been. This is one of those ideal places. Sometimes I turn on a little jazz, and go there in my memory. Now, if only I could figure out how to make my food as appealing…
