My husband gave me an orchid for Valentine’s Day this year – and I haven’t killed it yet! I feared it had a short life ahead of it.

I have had no experience with orchids and neither have my friends. I requested help from my facebook friends and blog readers. In the end, it was my husband who saw a gardener on tv adding three ice cubes per week to his orchids. We decided to try it in order to keep enough water in it without getting it too wet.

The blooms fell slowly until there was only one hanging on. Finally, it let go and I was left with a long empty pair of stalks and a few thick leaves.

I didn’t know what to do. So, I did nothing except for adding the ice cubes.
Life moved on.

A couple of weeks ago I noticed some buds and they rapidly ballooned until they popped out like kernels of popcorn.
Now both stalks are hanging in blooms and I’ve given it star position in my garden window. Isn’t this better than cut flowers that would have lasted a few days at best!
