Horse racing goes to New York today with the final leg of the Triple Crown races. Although the excitement lags a little, at least for me – as there is no pulse quickening possibility of a victor for this trilogy – the race itself promises to be a fantastic showdown.
Will Animal Kingdom – the surprise blow out winner of The Kentucky Derby – take two races of the three? Or will Shackleford – the horse that led most of the Kentucky Derby before giving out and then coming back to take the Preakness – prove he possesses the winners’ spirit?
Isn’t He Perfect seems to be the underdog in today’s race. The last time I checked, his odds were about 50-1.
Seven of this field of twelve placed in The Kentucky Derby in the top seven spots, Animal Kingdom, Nehro, Mucho Macho Man, Shackleford, Master of Hounds, Santiva, and Brilliant Speed in that order and Stay Thirsty finished twelfth, making it the eighth horse from the Derby to be competing in today’s race.
Shackleford and Animal Kingdom took first and second, in that order, at the Preakness, and Mucho Macho Man placed sixth, with Isn’t He Perfect taking ninth.
That leaves us with three horses – Monzon, Prime Cut and Ruler on Ice who may be as yet unproven with these horses. Oh well, that’s the beauty of the horse racing world.
Here’s the Field in no particular order:
Animal Kingdom
Shackleford
Mucho Macho Man
Master of Hounds
Nehro
Stay Thirsty
Santiva
Ruler on Ice
Brilliant Speed
Monzon
Prime Cut
Isn’t He Perfect
I’d have to say that Animal Kingdom looks good for this race. He took the derby by a long shot, finished second in the Preakness and has a lot of spunk. But Shackleford also shows a propensity for taking two of the three. But let’s not discount Mucho Macho Man. He’s a lot of horse and I like his trainer.
So, I’ll meet you at the track!
