I is for Instead

This may seem like an odd word to write a blog post about. But I think it is very important. We use this word a lot and it can mean we are settling for less.

When you find yourself saying ‘instead’, what is it in context with?

Are you in a job you were told would be lucrative instead of ____________?

Did you study something sensible in school instead of _____________?

Are you staying in a bad __________ instead of pursuing happiness?

Are you holding on to a hurt or a wrong instead of healing and letting it go?

I think the words that follow ‘instead’ are usually the truest in our lives. They are the ones that make our hearts sing and minds dance with possibilities. They serve to fill us with energy and verve.

What have you been doing ‘instead’?

  1. “The words following ‘instead’ the truest in our lives”? Well, Renee, if you want truth:This minute I am writing to you instead of doing something else. The former more enjoyable than the latter.

  2. Hi,
Oh yes, I was thinking about making a nice cup of coffee, it is nearly 9 pm here, but instead I thought no, I will come over here and check out your post first. πŸ˜€

  3. I should be taking my morning walk, but instead I’m reading blogs! (BUT, the walk will happen shortly.) We just don’t realize the importance of many of the words we use everyday. Great choice for your “I” entry!

  4. Very thought-provoking post! Right now I am blogging instead of ….that other stuff I should be doing.

Nice to meet you, and I hope you’re enjoying the Challenge!

  5. I’m finally following my dream of writing instead of doing the same old, same old. It’s as if I woke up one day and there was a light inside me. Now, I can never go back to the non-writing life! πŸ™‚

  6. Renee, this one is one among my most favorite post in your blog. Wonderful thought & beautifully written with in few words.
I ‘m a computer engineer in stead of a filmmaker. πŸ™‚ And I can tell you the word “instead” plays a very important role in my life. πŸ™‚

  7. I’m catching up on reading the blogs I follow instead of doing my round of evening tasks! Much more fun to be doing this, although I’ll get to the other too. Just rewarding myself with a little “me” time first! Great post, thought provoking! ~ Sheila

  8. That is a great way to view the word. I’ll have to start incorporating this when I’m making decisions. Yup, going to have chocolates for breakfast πŸ™‚
