As much as I’m addicted to photographing the moon, the sun is demanding its share of my attention. Our cabin in Bland, Virginia has spectacular long range views, making it prime for both sunrises and sunsets.
“When I admire the wonders of a sunset or the beauty of the moon, my soul expands in the worship of the creator.” – Mahatma Gandhi
Recently, I captured a sunset banked against clouds. I thought I’d share it with you.

“Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.” – Rabindranath Tagore
Literally, a fire blazing in the sky. Little Mattie Stepanek, the wise child who lit up our hearts with his poetry, wisdom, and calls for peace, gave me a favorite quote. He said, “Sunset is still my favorite color, and rainbow is second.”
Back glow behind the dark clouds edged them with pink.
“How strange this fear of death is! We are never frightened at a sunset.” – George McDonald
As most of you know, I am participating in Nanowrimo – the great novel writing challenge that occurs in November. For more on how that is coming along – or not – visit my writing site, reneejohnsonwrites. There is a meter there, measuring my progress and holding my feet to the fire.
But I’ll always take time to admire such a spectacular sunset. How about you?
Well, Renee, you know what a fan I am of sunrises and sunsets! (And I think it takes a particular talent to photograph the moon: one that I haven’t deveoped yet…)
I love that little quote: “Sunset is still my favorite color, and rainbow is second”. That one is going in my book of favorites!
Enjoy your weekend.
Thanks Dianna. Praise from you on sunset photography is highly prized!
Beautiful photos. I think it’s especially important to take time for things like sunsets when you’ve got you nose to the grindstone. Good luck with the November novel.
Thanks Lisa. It did seem appropriate.
The sky songs have certainly been glorious recently. Molly gets annoyed when I try to rush her down to the bridge so we can see without roof tops. (The German says VA is particularly beautiful right now)
Love the quote about sunset being a favorite color! Nice find
I recently saw a rolling cloud. It reminded me of something out of Harry Potter. The sky has been incredible this fall, which probably means there is a lot of trash in the atmosphere.
Reblogged this on bestofcartoon.
Thank you.
Spectacular is exactly the word. These really are gorgeous sunsets. I’m thinking that Bland, Virginia is anything but.
You certainly have that right. We never know what (or who) is going to show up. The last time we were over there was another wild steer. This one is white, reminding me of a ghost cow.
I love your photos and quotes. You have the heart of a poet and articulate the beauty wonderfully. I enjoy the irony of the name of Bland. lol That gives me a smile.
Enjoy your nano adventures. I admire you for taking the challenge. I’m cheering you on from across the miles. 🙂
Thank you. I can use all the encouragement I can get. Yeah, the name ‘Bland’ gives me the chuckles too.
Beautiful, beautiful! Just curious, what camera do you use? I recently bought a Canon Rebel, just beginning to learn about it. I think it will take me…oh, about a hundred years at my speed!…to figure out all the things it can do! Whatever you’re using, keep it up! ~ Sheila
Mine is a Canon XS50. If you want to see it and get a little more information, click on the link for a blog post I wrote called, ‘Zooming In’. It is wonderful Sheila. It does all of the work and I get all of the credit. The universe is just as it should be. LOL.
I love sunsets as well as sunrises. And clouds in general. Thanks for sharing the sky in your neck of the woods.
Autumn lends itself to really nice sunsets here. It’s hard not to be mesmerized.
Well done, Renee. I know for a fact how hard it is to capture the sunset in all its glorious colors. You have out done yourself, madam!
That is high praise from you Monica. I thank you!
Don’t want to miss a sunset. 🙂 I’ll have to check out your meter soon!
You never know. This camera is allowing me to capture things I never thought possible.
Beautiful pictures, you did a great job capturing the moment. I love sunrises and sunsets, they are both equally beautiful but both different in many ways and so peaceful.
check out a couple pictures of a cold front sunset I caught this week; Sunset and Icicles
I enjoyed your pictures and browsing your blog.
Michael 🙂
Thank you. I’m headed over to yours right now.
Wonderful captures and quotes to match. Hope your writing is going well … and Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
I’ve tried taking pictures of sunsets, and they never look like yours. Beautiful shots and, as Michelle said, anything but Bland.
